Virginia/MIB Game

Yesterday a few of the girls and all of the coaches and me and my mother-in-law went to watch MIB play at Virginia. MIB won on a shot at the buzzer by Charlotte Overbye and the final score was 72-70. MIB was down at the half by 10, 37-27.

I thought there would be more people, there wasn't much energy in the crowd and it was just an odd game to me. Their top scorer, Charlotte Overbye, who had 43 points last Thursday against Babbitt, had an off game (or so their fans behind us said). She only had 4 points in the first half which surprised everyone and you could tell she was frustrated and just not in the game. She did however come alive a little bit in the second half and of course hit the game winning shot with 2-3 girls surrounding her when she shot. But as close as the game got in the second half with the lead changing several times, the crowd just did not seem to get into the game.

Virginia was out one of their starters and top scorers in Alexis Podpeskar, as she was on the sidelines with crutches and I think that might have made a big difference in the outcome. Their big girl Jessa Youso also fouled out with about 5 minutes left and that really hurt them. They did shoot their free throws very well and were 25 of 29.

While they were covering Charlotte well, senior Rhonda Towner stepped up in a big way hitting three treys and ended up with 22 on the night. I checked the site where they post their stats and she averages 7.8 ppg, so she really stepped up. Charlotte still ended up with 17, sister McKenzie with 16, Vanessa Aultman with 10 and a few others.

Listening to a group of guys sitting directly behind us was what kept us entertained during the game....their comments about the refs and about the MIB players and that MinnesOta accent that you gotta love was priceless. A couple of comments that we laughed out loud about were about Charlotte not having a good game and you know they could tell what kind of game she was going to have from the get go just by the way she looked and her expressions....and that her boyfriend must be in the crowd somewhere and that she was at that dance last night ya know. Then when they didn't like a call by the Lamppa brothers (Davis and Josh) it was funny too. Boy, I've seen Davis ref better games than this before and I don't think I seen Josh blow that whistle yet and I betcha if it was one of his games and they called that call, he'd be throwin' that clipboard and screamin'! Anyway, like I said, it was priceless.....and definately kept us entertained.

U can betcha they won't be that calm when the Lady Huskies come to town....eh?
