The Bigfork Lady Huskies picked up win #2 last night on their home court against the Eagles of Tower-Soudan. The score at the half was Bigfork 46, Tower 10. Shelby got into foul trouble and had to sit a little while in the first half and then again in the second half, ending up with three fouls. Megan Powell had a great night of shooting and ended up with 21 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals, with Shelby at 16 with three rebounds, three steals and two assists, Jenna at 14 with four rebounds, two steals and two assists, Adrianna with 10 and 14 rebounds, four assists and four steals, Annalise with 8 points, nine assists and six rebounds, Brittney Stewart with 2 points and three rebounds and Robin Prather 3. I'm missing 2 points and don't know whose they are! Rachel had four rebounds, two assists and two steals. The B-Squad won their second game of the year also but I didn't write the final score down. Congratulations Lady Huskies on another "W"!

Bigfork beats Cotton in first game of 07-08 season.

Even with an astounding 20 fouls, two starters fouling out (Megan Powell and Lise Klamm) and another with four fouls (Jenna Beckner), the team pulled out a win with the final score 76-50. Tonight was Adrianna Ivanovic's "starting debut" so it was interesting to see how see would do in her first varsity game as a starter. She did very well ending up with 17 points and 1 foul. I don't know the other stats yet, but I'm pretty sure she had 10 or more rebounds also. I'll post these once they are published in the Grand Rapids paper. Shelby also had a good game ending up with 19 points. The following is what I have for scoring on the night:

Halftime score: Bigfork 34, Cotton 23
Final score: Bigfork 76, Cotton 50

Jenna #21: 9, four fouls
Shelby #3: 19, one foul
Adrianna #24: 17, one foul
Megan Powell #31: 5, fouled out
Annlise Klamm #5: 8, fouled out
Theresa Stewart #25: 11
Brittany Stewart #35: 5, three fouls
Rachel Kacon #23: 2, one foul

The B-Squad also won and their final score was 45-29. They had a tough first half but really came out in the second half and came alive! Great job girls!

Here are a few pictures from the evening of both A & B Squads. The girls will host Tower-Soudan this Thursday, Nov. 29th.

Hibbing Scrimmage 11/24/07

The girls played in a scrimmage at the Hibbing High School today and fared pretty well...a few things to work on but it was the first time they played together against a different team besides themselves! I'm sure the coach can always find something that needs work! They played Hibbing twice and Cotton twice, running 20 minute clock and no score was kept. A few parents kept scores and this is how they had it:

Bigfork beat Hibbing by 2 the first game
Bigfork beat Cotton by 30+ the second game
Hibbing beat Bigfork by 2 the third game, and
Bigfork beat Cotton by 7 or so in the fourth, mixing up the bench with the starters to get everyone some much needed playing time.

Here are a few pictures from the day......we are looking forward to their first game against Cotton on Tuesday, November 27th.

Practice Begins for the 2007 season

Practice began on Monday, November 12th with a few new faces and few that surprisingly decided not to play this year. The girls found conditioning and the overall practices to be quite different this year! Much harder but excited about the new drills and to see where Coach Powell is going this year. Some quite sore as usual, but realize they have to make sacrifices and work hard to have another successful season!

There are only two seniors this year in Rachel Kacon and Jenna Beckner, with juniors Shelby Goble and Brittany Stewart, sophomores Megan Powell, Annalise Klamm, Adrianna Ivanovic, Robin Prather, Ashley Kopplemann, Brittany Hoyt, Stacey Harnden, Theresa Stewart and many freshman also. The team will be young again, but very fast and lots of great passing and good shooters. They should be able to score from practically anywhere! Much anticipation from parents, families and fans for the season to get started....

They have a scrimmage at Hibbing High School on Saturday, November 24th and I will update the blog with a few pictures and how they did soon after.....

2007 Summer Tournaments

The girls played in various summer tournament and the team camp in Moorhead, MN and were pretty successful with a first place at the Walker 16-team tournament in June. They also participated in the Breakdown tournament in Grand Rapids and took second at the Barnum tournament in June, losing to Barnum by 5 points.

The girls were invited to participate in the Sweet 16 tournament in August where the top four teams from each class are invited to play. The girls were short-handed but played very well. They lost their first three games but beat Hancock in their last game by 30 points. Hancock placed second in state last year in Single A, so they were pretty excited about that win. Everyone was shooting well that day...

2006-2007 Season

Last year's season was a very fun and exciting one with the Lady Huskies breaking the school record with most wins, most wins in a row and also had their most successful season in girls' basketball at Bigfork High School ending with 27 wins and 3 losses. The girls also won the Northern Lakes Conference with a record of 10-0! The highlight of the season had to be the game against #1 ranked Barnum in the semi-final Section 7A tournament game, winning in double digits, 46-35....one of the most exciting basketball games I have ever attended and to come in as the underdog and win in the fashion that the girls did, was simply exhilerating to say the least! What a game they played for their fans at the Hibbing Memorial Arena.Unfortunately, the girls lost to Chisholm in the Section 7A Championship game and were just one game shy reaching their goal of making it to the State Tournament for the first time in the girls' basketball program at BHS. It was a heartbreaker, especially for the three seniors, Nicolle, Jordan and Karla. They all played their hearts out and had plenty to be proud of! Here are a few pictures from the Barnum game...
