Section 7A Tournament Dates
I had a request to list the dates that the girls would be playing and where once the Section 7A tournament begins...they have a bye because they are the No. 1 seed, so their first game will be at Greenway on 3/5/09 at 7:45 pm. The game prior to ours would be #4 Ely v. #5 Cook. We would play the winner of the #8 seed vs. #9 seed. I think that is Orr and Tower-Soudan. I bet they are dreading that game... :)
The remaining games will be played at Hibbing Memorial Arena and would be Saturday, 3/7/09 at 7:45, then Monday, 3/10/09 at 7:45 and the Section 7A Championship game will be on a Thursday, 3/12/09 at 7:00 pm. Let's hope the Hibbing Memorial Arena will be full of Bigfork fans on March 12, 2009!!!!

100 Hits!!!
Wow! I checked to see how many people have "hit" my blog today and there are 100 hits as of 11:30 pm....that is a first! I've been averaging about 60 per day so that was a nice surprise!

Adorable Picture
I'm just starting to go through a ton of pictures that I took at last night's game and had to post this one separately...I thought this was the cutest thing I have seen at a ball game this year....this tiny little guy stood and stared at their Ranger mascot for the longest time! I think he was waiting for the Ranger to talk or come alive...it was just darling and one of those precious moments we get to enjoy in life once in a while. There was another tiny little boy shooting baskets with a basketball that was just for his size and he would make a few of them and everytime he did, the crowd would cheer. He was shooting and this other little guy was waiting for the Ranger to make an appearance...what a night.
Huskies Battle the Rangers and Win
The Lady Huskies won a great game tonight over the Rangers of Mountain Iron-Buhl with a score of 65-57. It was an intense game with a large crowd that added even more to the atmosphere. Lots of Huskie fans made the long trip from Bigfork to support the girls and it was great to see...the girls needed their cheers and applause tonight!
Adrianna had another big night with four three's and 26 points and Annalise chipped in with 21, hitting two back to back three's at a crucial time in the game that gave the girls a spark to start the second half. It was nice to see her step up and score when needed...it comes so easily for her too!
Shelby ended up with 10 and Megan with 8 tonight. The one picture of the girls of both teams and the ref standing were during the technical while Shelby was shooting the two free throws.
Congrats girls and way to secure your spot as #1 seed! Now it's time to get ready for tournament games...the girls will have a bye and will play their first game next Thursday, 3/5/09 at 7:45 pm. They will end up playing the winner of the #8 and #9 seed. I don't know who those teams are yet but I have an idea...we will know more after the seed meeting on Saturday.

Quote of the Day ~ 2/26/09
I got this quote from Auntie Delores today and loved it...she is the Queen of Quotes and is full of life, always on the go, has the best stories and tries her darndest to live life to the fullest! She is the sister of Rodney, my husband's father, who passed away unexpectantly this past October. He was a man's man and was truly loved by this community and touched so many people's lives...there were about 350 that attended his funeral. It has really bothered Shelby that he is not here to watch her play her senior year and has told me that she prays and thinks about her grandpa during the playing of the National Anthem at each game. It meant alot to her when he was able to attend some of her games. Her Grandma Max hasn't missed a home game this year and has been working her schedule so that she can attend every tournament game and of course take time off if they are fortunate enough to make the trip to State. She has all of the dates marked down and scheduled to take them off when and if the time comes....
Auntie Delores' Quote:
Motto to Live By
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways , body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming, "Woo Hoo, what a ride!"
I just loved it and what a great way to think about living your life....told ya she's a hoot!

Congratulations Bubba and Brittney
Congratulations to Joseph "Bubba" Jacobson and Brittney Stewart for being crowned 2009 Sweetheart King and Queen!! Bubba plays basketball on the boys' team and Brittney is of course the only other senior on the team with Shelby and a senior captain also.
It was a very nice ceremony with a funny 70's theme and the little 5th graders reading their poem to each candidate. Bubba is about 6'5" and his little poetry reader is the tiniest 5th grader you will ever see and a little doll! It was so cute...
Shelby and Drew Francisco are the reigning Homecoming King and Queen and crowned the winners so it was fun to see them all dressed up again. The court were "supposed" to dance and be silly during one of the songs that was played, and Shelby was the only one that got into the music! She tried to get the others' going but no one would budge....I was proud of my crazy little girl and she had us laughing so that was also a highlight for me. I love her outlook on life and that she is not afraid to be herself and have a little fun out there!

A Bright Note
Here are a few comments posted on a forum from anonymous people regarding Section 7A and 7AA:
"Well the much anticipated Bigfork/MIB match-up is upon us...anybody have any predictions?
I hope Bigfork shows up with the mentality that they are the better team and goes out there and takes it. Of course the reffing will probably be bad and probably one sided but they have to look beyond that and remember that this is their time.
The hostile crowd should do nothing but motivate Bigfork...the atmosphere should be great! Having played in front of big crowds in the play-offs the last couple of years it should not phase the Huskies a bit. I'm more interested to see how MIB handles that.
If you look at the records they are very even, but MIB has not played ANYBODY who will bring the defensive pressure that Bigfork brings. It will be intersting to see how they handle that. It also has to be lingering in the back of their minds that Bigfork tore them up in the play-offs last year.
If Bigfork plays smart solid defense and avoids the reaching and ticky tack fouls the game will not be close."
New post:
"Wow, strong words! I have to agree with you though, I think Bigfork is the best team in 7A by far, but anything can happen at this time of the year. I think if they can contain Charlotte, then they have a good chance of winning. She is what makes them go. As she goes, MIB will go. But I just think Bigfork has too many weapons and too much big game experience. This might be a preview of the Section Finals!!
THESE ARE SOME NICE COMMENTS FROM A FEW PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT RESPECT OUR GIRLS!

This Should Get the Girls Going
The Breakdown website has their "predictions" for the section tournaments coming up and this is what "they" predict for Section 7A:
Section: 7A
Quick Take: Top half of this of this section is loaded.
Predicted Section Final: Nashwauk-Keewatin vs. Cook County
Section Winner: Nashwauk-Keewatin
Don’t Be Surprised If: Mountain Iron Buhl gets by Nashwauk and Bigfork. Bigfork could also continue their rise and win this section.
I really don't get why our girls cannot get any credit for their hard work and accomplishments over the past three years. They have lost only 8 games in the past three seasons and have won the Northern Lakes Conference three years in a row. They have made it to the Section 7A Championship game two years in a row and still can not get anyone to believe in them.
I guess they will just have to BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES.....this ought to get them really ready for tournaments! Remember the earlier post about the t-shirt? THE MORE TRASH YOU TALK THE MORE I RUN THE SCORE UP....
NEW MOTTO: THE MORE YOU TRASH OUR TEAM, THE MORE DETERMINED AND FOCUSED WE BECOME....HOW'S THAT FOR YA?

Couldn't Put It Better....
I read this on a forum on the Minnesota Scores site and thought it rang very true AND makes you think....this is appropriate for the Lady Huskies as they have just won their THIRD Northern Lakes Conference title in a row, a "3 Peat" so to speak, for the years 2006-2007, 2007-2008 and the current season 2008-2009. I wonder if this will ever happen again in Lady Huskie history? I hope they can make it 4 next year and that would be a VERY tough record to beat. They received their new Conference Champion t-shirts last night and wore them as they ran out at the beginning of the game. Of course Coach Powell ordered extra, so if you want to buy one do so soon so you can wear them during tournament games! (and before they run out)
Anyway, here is the message I was talking about:
"The approach that many coaches, players and a few fans take in preparing for basketball season breaks the season down to a manageable and achievable series of goals. Some are specific in nature and some are very general. General things such as improve rebounding, play good defense and always play hard are stressed from game to game, win or lose. Then, there are the specific goals: win the division of the conference...win the conference. That will take a team through the first 24 or 25 games. That is the bulk of the season. Goals are important and are very necessary. By the very nature of the sport of basketball, most teams don't quite achieve all of their goals. The play from week to week and game to game rises and falls. The rebounding, the defense, the effort of the team is good some games and not as good for other games. That is coachable. There are many lessons to be learned during the regular season. Really only a handful of teams around the state achieve their more specific goals during this regular season phase. That is what makes the achievement of winning a conference division title and/or going on to win a conference title a very special thing for the players and coaches of the teams that achieve those goals. It takes generally very consistent play over a three month period to achieve a conference divisional title or a conference title. It is a measure of the "long-haul..." aspect of high school basketball. There is not much hoopla surrounding this achievement. It is much more matter of fact. However, over the course of time, it is an achievement that will always mean something to those players and their coaches. Fans have an appreciation for that accomplishment, especially the fans of the teams that achieve that long-term goal, because it means that they have had the chance to witness very consistently exciting and often times very good, hard-fought regular season games. They have travelled hundreds of miles or further to support their kids and their school's team. They have been treated to some great basketball. Even the fans have put in a lot of "gym" time.
However, the TOURNAMENT FEVER very quickly arrives at the end of February for Girl's Basketball and in March for Boy's Basketball. When we have this condition of Tournament Fever, the events of the regular season are quickly placed in the background. It is all about respecting every opponent, never looking past any opponent and hopefully "going on a long run..." all the way to the Twin Cities and the State Tournament. Most will have their seasons end before that can happen...but...what a dream! The teams that make it will be remembered by their fans and other team's fans. It is magical. It is every players, coaches and fans dream for their team. It becomes the reason for having played the regular season. It is the time of the season that gives real meaning to the often used "...good luck, may the better team win and may there be no injuries..." phrases and sentiments that we all use before each game tips off. At Tournament time, for a brief moment any and everything is possible. Virtually all of us won't see that dream achieved...but...for one team in each class from each section, that dream will be achieved. That is the beauty of TOURNAMENT TIME. Le's just all appreciate the incredible efforts of all theses players, coaches and teams. Let's not get so caught up in TOURNAMENT FEVER that we forget what we have been treated to during the regular season. And now, during this phase of the basketball season, it is true that "...to the victor goes the spoils..."
Yet, I sure have enjoyed the December, January and February of the 2009/2009 regular season of basketball ...and I won't forget it. I look forward to all the dramatic and exciting events that this brief TOURNAMENT FEVER period of time will bring us heading into March. Hold on tight...an incredible journey is about to begin for a class A, class AA, class AAA and class AAAA team in our section and in each section of the State of Minnesota. They will all get together for the TOURNAMENT in the Twin Cities and new STATE CHAMPIONS will be crowned. Oh, what a year it has been for all of us to this point in time! For a VERY few teams, Oh, what a year it will be!
Having a chance to win a Conference Title is one of the special things that can happen once in a while for a team though. Even if it will be quickly overshadowed by "TOURNAMENT FEVER." It is a GREAT time of the year!"

A Very Sad Time
On a very sad note, Tiffany Porter passed this afternoon around 2:00 pm. My heart breaks for her husband and their families...please pray for them to be strong as they get through this difficult time.
Lady Huskies Pick Up Nice Win Against Ely
The Lady Huskies did a fine job tonight against the Ely Timberwolves and are now 21-2. The score at the half was 39-22 and the final 71-44. The last time we played them in the Hibbing tournament the score was 69-35.
Adrianna had a strong shooting night with six 3's and ended up with 21 points, Shelby with 17, Megan with 14, Lise with 9, Kate with 4, and Britney and Theresa with 3 each. It was Parent's Night and their was actually quite a crowd and Shelby had her own mini-crowd from Dora Lake which was nice...a few came out for the first time this year and that was nice to see also.
A little emotional for Shelby after the game realizing it was the last time she will play with her teammates in the Bigfork gym.
A few Mountain Iron-Buhl coaches in the crowd even though their team played tonight at Greenway....
Good job again girls!! Now get some rest the next two nights and eat some carbs Wednesday night!

Prayers for the Porter Family
Just wanted to ask that your thoughts and prayers go out to a local family from Bigfork who are very involved in the community and school as they go through a very difficult time. Nick Porter graduated from Bigfork High School a few years ago and married his lifelong love, Tiffany, over a year ago. His parents and siblings are very involved in the Bigfork community and are very well liked....without going into details that I am unsure of, Tiffany suffered some type of brain hemmorage yesterday and is in Duluth with her family and Nick's family surrounding her. The situation is not good and I just want them to know that everyone in the Bigfork and surrounding communities are praying for them and have them in their thoughts.
They are a wonderful, newly married couple that literally beam with joy and happiness....please keep them in your thoughts today....things like this are hard to understand and sure make you think about how precious our lives and our families' lives are....

Parent's Night Tonight
Well tonight is Parent's Night and the girls are set to play the Ely Timberwolves. They have a record of 14-7 with a recent loss on Saturday to Two Harbors. We played them in the third place game of the Hibbing Christmas Tournament and defeated them by a score of 69-35 but by looking at their record, they have improved quite a bit since the holiday tournaments.
They beat Chisholm by one point, defeated Cook Co. (which beat MIB) and also defeated a tough Cook Gopher team...so they aren't a team to look lightly at. The girls are going to have to play tough tonight as Mariah McDonald has been heating up the scoreboard every game.
My wish is for the Lady Huskies to have a great game tonight and that Shelby has a good game the last time she plays in the Jerry Chiabotti Gymnasium....just play the way you always do and good things will come....

Did You Miss Me?
I had a problem yesterday at noon and could not get into my Internet Explorer until this morning, and I had to get someone to help me with the problem! Every time I logged onto Internet Explorer, it would say IE has experienced and problem and has to shut down...and darn it if it would shut down every time!
I had 67 people logged onto the Blog within that time so I'm really sorry there was nothing new to read about! Someone even logged on from Cairo, Egypt! I'm sure that was by accident, but it's always fun to see where people are from when they log on.

Quote of the Day ~ 2/21/09
Confidence is the result of hours and days and weeks and years of constant work and dedication.
~Roger Staubach
This quote sure sums up our current Lady Huskies' team!!!
I counted up how many different high schools over the state of MN, ND and WI and how many large venues in MN, ND, WI and IL that Shelby has played ball in over the past 6-7 years and there were over 50 high schools (that I could remember) and about 10 or more large venues like UND, UofM, Target Ctr, UW-Stout, BSU, Moorhead State, St. Ben's, St. Thomas, Chicago site, etc. That is one heck of alot of places that she has played basketball! Now, think of all the money just in paying the price of admissions! That would really be scary!

We changed spots again with Mountain Iron-Buhl and are now above them. The win and point difference from last night must have figured into the forumla somehow. It is getting interesting folks. Barnum's QRF is through the roof and way above anyone else. That is just crazy....they ended up 2nd last year on the QRF and their score was 154.3. They are already 10 points above that this year and the regular season isn't even over. It doesn't look anyone will touch them...I hope they make it through playoffs in Section 5A and I'm sure they will as it would be a shame to see them get beat by anyone. But then, I would say the same thing for Bigfork this year!

Little Bitty Lady Huskies Are Awesome!!
The little girls played during halftime last night and I have to say I was thoroughly enjoyed and very impressed! They were so determined and hustled the whole time they were out there...some very good dribblers and look at that defense in the pictures! That is what really impressed me! I think there's a new crop of young Lady Huskies that have a great future ahead of them....watch out.
I decided not to post pictures of the older girls from last night as I didn't really take very many as it was kind of a boring game and I had more fun taking pictures of the little girls. So they are going to be highlighted today...what a bunch of cuties.

Bigfork Defeats Littlefork-Big Falls, 87-17
The Lady Huskies handily defeated the Lady Vikings tonight by 70 points, 87-17. The first time around the score was 86-16, a difference of 60 points. Lots of girls got some needed playing time to get ready for tournaments and Kate Dullard had double figures tonight with 14 points! Way to go Katie Bear!
I believe the score at the half was 60-8. Four of the starting five played little into the second half and gave the bench some good minutes tonight. They did a good job of taking care of the ball, passing and shooting...Adrianna led all scorers tonight with 24 and two three's, Shelby had 22 with four three's, Lise had 16, Kate 14, Megan 6, Julia 4, and Carolyn 2. That adds up to 88, but two people had the same points so I don't know where they were off.
At halftime the little Saturday Ball girls played and were very fun to watch! I got some really cute pictures and will go through them tomorrow sometime. I have to run to town so it will probably be later in the day.
Coach Powell was also honored tonight for being voted Coach of the Year for Section 7A. He was given a nice photo that all the girls and coaches signed and of course cake and balloons and a nice board with photos of him coaching the different teams over the years. It was very nice...I got a cute photo (with awful lighting) and will put that up tomorrow also.
Great job again Lady Huskies!

Minnesota Girls AP Polls ~ 2/18/09
The new AP Poll rankings came out yesterday and Bigfork is still in the Top Ten! They did drop down to #9 from #7 after their loss to Deer River but they have been in the Top Ten the whole season so that is a nice accomplishment in itself. I don't understand how New Life Academy can have four losses and still be in the top five....it would be interesting to see how they come up with their standings. Not that it really matters anyway...

Oh My Gosh, Oh My Gosh, OMG!!!!
Shelby decided to go to her sister's tonight so she could sleep in an extra 40 minutes before school and while she was waiting for her to get home, she got a call from the MN Coaches Association informing her that she will be able to play in the Class A All Star Game!!! She was the second alternate so I figured there was no way she would get to play in that one as it is the big one! They choose 10 girls with two alternates from Class A schools in the State of Minnesota.
One of the girls has prom that night so she can't play and so Shelby gets to play! She was very excited about it and called Coach Powell right away to let him know. Two good things two days in a row for the Bigfork team... Coach Powell and now Shelby.
Shelby said it was April 20th but that can't be right as that is a Monday and it is a two day tournament between Class A, AA, AAA and AAAA... I'm thinking it will be April 18th & 19th. He is sending her info in the mail so when I get the "official" documentation I will post it....I can't wait to see who the other girls will be! What a huge honor and a nice way to end her senior year....I'm so proud of her I had to share....

Searching Through Old Pictures Again
I am going through the girls' basketball pictures from a few years ago and I took this picture during the 2007 Section 7A Tournament in Hibbing. I cropped it to cut out some junk and then converted it to a vintage action that I use alot. I LOVE the way it came out! Just thought I would share a cool picture....at least I think it is! How appropriate that the 2009 tournament will be held there this year on March 12, 2009 and coincidently that on March 12, 1988, the Bigfork boys' basketball team won the 7A Section Championship at Hibbing Memorial Arena and made it to the State Tournament for their very first appearance. They qualified again in 96' or 98'...I will have to double check on that one. Both teams were coached by Jerry Chiabotti who was my husband's teacher and basketball coach when he was in high school, and Shelby's 6th grade teacher and one of her favorite teachers at her time at BHS. Bigfork High School now houses the Jerry Chiabotti Gymnasium.....
The girls have the chance to make school history by being the first girls' basketball team to make a State appearance in any girls' team sport at Bigfork. That would be an awesome coincidence and quite the story....
They still have work to do to get there and are by no means taking this season lightly as they do not want to end up Runner-Up in Section 7A for the third time in a row....they have the whole community behind them and we are very proud of them!!
Everyone come out and support the Bigfork Lady Huskies as they play their last three regular season games and get ready for tournaments!!!

Coach Powell Is Honored ~ Coach of the Year, Section 7A
The girls were informed today that their Coach, Greg Powell, was selected as the Coach of the Year for Section 7A!!! This is a pretty big honor and we are very proud of Coach Powell and the hard work and dedication that he has put into the girls' basketball program at Bigfork. He has had three back to back good years with great records: 2006-2007 (27-3), 2007-2008 (26-3) and so far this year 2008-2009 (19-2). That is only 8 losses in three years!!!
He is very humble about it and said the reason he got the award was because of the girls...we all know that is not the only reason. I'm not exactly sure how many years he has been the head coach, but I think it is 15 or 16 years...I should have asked to make sure!
Here is a picture of Greg with Shelby last year during the Chisholm game when she was having a tough night and a picture from last night's game against Nashwauk. I have pictures of Greg with other girls but it is late and it would take me a while to sort through all of those files...I might go through them another day and add a few when I have more time.
Congratulations Coach Powell!
