Shelby was told yesterday by Coach Powell that he was notified by the Section Rep that she was selected as the 2nd Alternate for the Minnesota Coaches Association All Star game that is held in St. Cloud in April. They pick 10 girls and 2 alternates from the entire State of Minnesota to play on the Class A team. So there are 40 girls chosen to play on four teams, Class A, AA, AAA and AAAA.
It is a big honor and I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that maybe a couple of those girls will be going on vacation somewhere in April! If not, that's fine and it's just nice to see an athlete from the small town of Bigfork being recognized for a change!
Bigfork gets snubbed by the Duluth News Tribune and quite a bit by the Hibbing and Mesabi newspapers. The Grand Rapids Herald Review is the only newspaper that really puts an effort into covering our local teams! (Thanks Jason!) I just wish they would do what Duluth, Hibbing and Mesabi do at the end of each season for every sport: an All Area Team and Player of the Year. Softball, Baseball, Hockey, Soccer, Swimming, Wrestling, Track, Football, Basketball and on and on...there are plenty of area schools that are left out: Deer River, Hill City, Nashwauk-Keewatin, Greenway, Northland-Remer and Bigfork, just to mention a few. (Hint, Hint Jason) The reason I don't include Grand Rapids (which the Herald Review would have to) is because they are included in the Hibbing Daily News and the Duluth News Tribune All Area teams. Do you get it because I don't. Mesabi does include Bigfork in their All Area teams but it's pretty hard to get on that list as they mostly cover the range area teams. We are very lucky if we get an athlete in there....
Shelby also was awarded the Hardware Hanks Nuts and Bolts Athlete of the Week as the outstate athlete the week of January 6th. She was nominated by someone after her game against Ely in the Hibbing tournament and was chosen as the outstate athlete. They pick an outstate and metro athlete each week. Anyone can nominate the athletes and you can go to the Minnesota Sports Online and look for the link if you would like to nominate an athlete.
Congrats Baby Girl!
