Bigfork Takes Round 3 Over Nashwauk

The Lady Huskies defeated the Lady Spartans in their third round this season by a score of 52-45. The Lady Spartans were ahead at the half, 25-23. There were lots of people from both communities but I think Nashwauk might have had a few more than Bigfork. Some people didn't realize the game started at 6:00 so that might have been a factor. All in all, it was a good game that kept everyone on their toes.

I thought Bigfork actually missed alot of shots in both halves but kept their composure and pulled out the win. I knew Nashwauk was going to come in and fight hard and they did just that. It was a good, physical game that the girls needed to get ready for tournaments. They have had too many easy games this season, so this was what the doctor ordered!

Shelby had 19, Megan 18, Andi 10 and Lise 5...I don't know what the Lady Spartans had but would be interested to know what Kingsbury and Sletten had as they both had good games tonight.

The girls will need to defeat Littlefork-Big Falls on Thursday night to actually win the conference but it shouldn't be a problem as they are not having the best year and have won maybe two games so far. So we can't say they won the Conference yet, but are really close.

Congrats Lady Huskies on an important win tonight!

Now if this doesn't get the girls ready for tonight's game, I don't know what will! The last time the girls "heard" some smack from an opposing team, they answered very well....we'll see what happens tonight.

I told you guys it is going to be a good game!

Bigfork v. Nashwauk ~ Round Three, Ding Ding Ding

Tomorrow night the Lady Huskies will face off with the Lady Spartans in their third contest of the 2008-2009 season. Last year we played them three times also, and won three times, 67-49 (Hibbing tourn), 46-35 (home) and 53-47 (away). This year the scores have been 60-25 (Hibbing tourn) and 69-50 (away).

This year this third game will decide the Northern Lakes Conference title as we are tied in the conference. They play Deer River only once but because they beat them (by two) they get two points for that win. Their loss to us at Nashwauk counted for -1 and they need to beat us to win the conference since we lost one of our two games to Deer River.

So you can bet they will come with guns a blazin' and it's a very good thing we have home court advantage as our girls do not play well at their gym. I believe this would be their first Conference title so it is very important to them...we have won the title two years in a row and really don't want to give up the title just yet. AND it is a big Section game and will determine seeding in the Section come tournament time.

SO....EVERYONE PLEASE COME TO THE GAME TOMORROW NIGHT IN BIGFORK AND SUPPORT YOUR LADY HUSKIES!!!! There is no school tomorrow so the JV will play at 4:30 and the Varsity will play at 6:00pm.

Please come out and cheer LOUD for the girls! They need to have your support! Bring a few friends too! It will be broadcast on KMFY, but forget about that and come out to watch the game live!

See you tomorrow for a great game!

Virginia/MIB Game

Yesterday a few of the girls and all of the coaches and me and my mother-in-law went to watch MIB play at Virginia. MIB won on a shot at the buzzer by Charlotte Overbye and the final score was 72-70. MIB was down at the half by 10, 37-27.

I thought there would be more people, there wasn't much energy in the crowd and it was just an odd game to me. Their top scorer, Charlotte Overbye, who had 43 points last Thursday against Babbitt, had an off game (or so their fans behind us said). She only had 4 points in the first half which surprised everyone and you could tell she was frustrated and just not in the game. She did however come alive a little bit in the second half and of course hit the game winning shot with 2-3 girls surrounding her when she shot. But as close as the game got in the second half with the lead changing several times, the crowd just did not seem to get into the game.

Virginia was out one of their starters and top scorers in Alexis Podpeskar, as she was on the sidelines with crutches and I think that might have made a big difference in the outcome. Their big girl Jessa Youso also fouled out with about 5 minutes left and that really hurt them. They did shoot their free throws very well and were 25 of 29.

While they were covering Charlotte well, senior Rhonda Towner stepped up in a big way hitting three treys and ended up with 22 on the night. I checked the site where they post their stats and she averages 7.8 ppg, so she really stepped up. Charlotte still ended up with 17, sister McKenzie with 16, Vanessa Aultman with 10 and a few others.

Listening to a group of guys sitting directly behind us was what kept us entertained during the game....their comments about the refs and about the MIB players and that MinnesOta accent that you gotta love was priceless. A couple of comments that we laughed out loud about were about Charlotte not having a good game and you know they could tell what kind of game she was going to have from the get go just by the way she looked and her expressions....and that her boyfriend must be in the crowd somewhere and that she was at that dance last night ya know. Then when they didn't like a call by the Lamppa brothers (Davis and Josh) it was funny too. Boy, I've seen Davis ref better games than this before and I don't think I seen Josh blow that whistle yet and I betcha if it was one of his games and they called that call, he'd be throwin' that clipboard and screamin'! Anyway, like I said, it was priceless.....and definately kept us entertained.

U can betcha they won't be that calm when the Lady Huskies come to town....eh?

Win #18

After a rough start and more foul trouble, those cute refs turned out to be "not so cute" haha. Annalise and Megan sat about 10 minutes of the first half due to early fouls, with 2 each. One of those games after a long night and a tough loss the night before, it was a little hard to get their rhythm going. They did though, and pulled out the win with a final score of 68-26. There were four girls in double digits with Megan leading the way tonight with 17 (all in the second half no less), Andi with 15, Theresa with 14, Shelby with 11, Carolyn with 5, Lise 4 and Robin 2.

Sorry I didn't get the Deer River pictures posted today but will get some up tomorrow and hopefully get through some of the Hill City game also. I am behind on some other pictures that HAVE to be done tomorrow so it will be slow going.

There are pictures posted from Kevin J. Anderson's gallery and there are some good ones too... do a search for Kevin J. Anderson (the girls basketball recruit site guy) and you will find he has a gallery of the Bigfork/Deer River game. You should be able to click on the link and go directly there.

Try this link to Kevin's Gallery. http://www.photostockplus.com/home.php?tmpl=28&user_id=43230&event=254624&album=256970
Now to get ready for those pesky Spartans!!!!

P.S. Congratulations to their post, Lindsey Kingsbury, who hit the 1,000 point mark last week as a junior. A very fine player for the Nashwauk-Keewatin Spartans....she is the very first girl from their basketball program to reach that goal! That's a big honor and she should be congratulated!

Huskies Lose by One in OT to the Warriors

The Lady Huskies lost a tough one tonight in overtime to conference rival Deer River. Annalise Klamm hit a very long 3 to tie the game at 64 to send the game into overtime. Adrianna had fouled out at the end of the regulation game so was not able to help out in overtime play. She ended up top scorer tonight with 23, Shelby with 20, Megan 13, Lise 10 and Theresa 6. Unfortunately no one scored off of the bench tonight. Carolyn fouled a Warrior on a shot that tied the game at 72 and she made the winning free throw. We had about 5 seconds and were not able to score. Lise put up another long shot but unfortunately it didn't go in the second time around.

It was a physical game with Aspen Marleau hitting seven three's tonight. Jodie Seelye came off the bench for the Warriors tonight and hit a few key three's also. I believe they also did better at the free throw line as we missed 7 of 18 tonight. Just one of those would have made a difference in this game!

Bigfork/Deer River Game Rescheduled

The game that was cancelled for tonight has been rescheduled to Wednesday night. Which also happens to be the night that they are having the financial aid/scholarship meeting for seniors at the school! Did I say UGH before! Well UGH!!!!!!!!!! In my mind I'm screaming out loud....

It had better be a good game or else Old Man Winter is in lots of trouble with me! By the way, the reason the game was cancelled was because of VERY icy road conditions. It is raining and proceeding to freeze as I type....SO I guess it is more important the girls are all safe at home and not in a bus traveling on very icy roads....

Something to Make U Chuckle

This poor little boy....I found this by accident when I was searching for a little girl singing to show my mother-in-law last night and we laughed so hard! Anyway, if you can't click on this and it goes right to it, then go to youtube and search "David after dentist".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-bNunsWkIw

Old Man Winter is REALLY Making Me Mad!

The 2nd rivalry matchup between Bigfork and Deer River has been cancelled for the second time this year! UGH! What the heck is up with the weather this basketball season? The boys haven't had one game rescheduled and this is the THIRD one for the girls! What is up with that?

Somebody is toying with us and get us all excited for the game, and then BAM, sorry but it is cancelled....there must be some fantastic reason down the road for us to be this patient....hmmm, wonder what that could be?

And now I have to figure out what's for supper! UGH!

Once I hear what day the game is rescheduled for, I will post it...

More Found Treasures

These are pictures that I found of younger days that I had to scan so they aren't the best. The one picture of Greg with the girls was at a little tournament in Kelliher in which the girls took first place. This was the very first year that Shelby had played Saturday Ball so she is in 4th grade and most of the other girls are in 3rd grade here. The only starter that wasn't playing at that time was Adrianna.

The picture of the girls braiding their hair was the following year and their very first 5th grade Pacesetter tournament in Bemidji. I can't forget this one because they played Clearbrook-Gonvick in the first game and it went into double overtime. This would be one of the videos that I would love to show as it was the funnest game with Megan (4th grader at the time) stealing the ball, then getting to the three point line and hitting a 3! There was a team of older boys from Red Lake waiting for the court and starting bowing to her when she hit the 3....lots of screaming by the coaches and fans because it was such an exciting game (at least to us). They then played a Bagley team and lost that game by a point or two and I remember Lise putting up a half court shot that bounced in and came out so they were heartbroken and of course all were crying. I remember the little girls from Bagley looking at them and couldn't believe how hard they were crying so they came over and talked to them and said how great they played and gave them hugs, etc. One of those Bagley girls ended up playing AAU ball with our girls and the coach of that team ALWAYS talked with us at every tournament we saw her at for years. She said she would always watch to see how the Bigfork girls' team was doing every year. They ended up playing Bemidji for third and lost by a few points. That game produced long term relationships also and is one of the reasons they were highlighted on Lakeland News last year and this year.

One of players' father is Dennis Weimann and he is the big shot at Lakeland News. He was so impressed with the girls that day and had very nice things to say about them. We ended up meeting them at another pacesetter tournament later that year and for many years after. He was the guy that gave our girls' names to get them started in AAU ball. He has also been following the girls since that little tournament and is still watching to see if they end their journey at the State tournament this year. He always said that he was watching a state tournament team.

Another picture that I love is the silhouette of the girls on the floating dock. This was our very first weekend trip to Willmar so the girls could play in the Pacesetter Open Tournament in New London-Spicer. Some very fun games and lots of video from that also. They ended up taking second place and took home a big trophy that is now sitting at the Huskie Cafe in Bigfork.

The last picture is at the North Country Classic tournament in Grand Rapids, MN and was a huge tournament. I remember at this tournament they had to play Grand Rapids their first game (the better of the two Rapids teams) and lost by one point. Of course we were whining about the refs then also...haha...as they had high school boys reffing and we thought they weren't calling anything on Rapids when our girls were driving in so our girls never got to shoot any free throws. After the game, Shelby's grandfather went up to one of the high school refs and proceeded to tell him off and that he should be disgraced at how he called the game! He said that they stole that game from these little girls! Anyway, it is a memory that we won't forget and since he passed away this past Fall right before Shelby's senior season began, it brings back memories of these little incidents from all of these years. This is another team that the girls would end up playing in different tournaments for many years. Many of these Grand Rapids' girls are seniors this year and went to State last year and have another good shot to get there this year. I just love the picture because of the way Shelby is looking up at her Dad and listening to what she should be doing on the court. And of course he still has plenty of advice for her this year too.

Quote of the Day ~ 2/9/09

This quote seems appropriate to this team when I think back to all of the camps and tournaments that these girls have played in from the 4th grade until this season. If I could figure out how to download some old video of the girls when they were little I would....

Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months and years they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is merely the demonstration of their championship character.

Second All Star Game Invite for Shelby

I guess it is time for All Star invites to go to seniors as Shelby received one at the school on Friday from DAYBA, which is the Duluth Area Youth Basketball Association. They have started a new All Star game and it will be the First Annual Northern Minnesota vs. Northern Wisconsin "Border Battle" and will be held at the new gym on the University of Wisconsin- Superior campus, April 4th at 1:00 pm. There will be a boys game to follow at 3:00.

There is no fee which is excellent and they get a memento jersey and shorts for the players to keep. I heard that a few of the girls that have been invited are Amber Dvorak (6'7" gopher recruit) from Hinckley, Roz Chromy of Esko, Andrea Gould from Wrenshall, Sam Stanfield of Crosby-Ironton, Brynn Joki of Grand Rapids, Marissa Yernatich of Duluth East, Hilary Peterson from Moose Lake-Willow River, a girl from Cloquet and another from Hinckley and our little Shelby Goble all the way from the small town of Bigfork, MN!

There may be a few others and if some can't play that date I'm sure they will invite a few others. That will be a fun and exciting day! Shelby played with the AAU team Northern Lights out of the Duluth area as did four of the other invitees, so I'm sure that helped in getting her invited. It is amazing what AAU ball has done for Shelby, just by people seeing her play all over the state for many years. She has met and made so many friends from so many different schools that we can't hardly go somewhere that she doesn't see someone she knows or has played with or against and even coaches from different schools. I don't know how many times she is asked "how do you know people EVERY where you go?"....they just shake their heads!

It may have been lots of running all over the state, gas, food, hotels, so many different schools and wasn't cheap that is for sure, but it WAS SO MUCH FUN and an experience she and I will remember for a long time. One day I should try and figure out just how many different schools she has actually played ball in...that would be interesting and probably scary! She's played in four states that I can think of, Minnesota, North Dakota, Illinois and Wisconsin.

I will have to sit down and figure that out today and get back to the blog on that one!

What a Nice Compliment!!!

I am adding a link to the article that the Hibbing Daily Tribune had about last night's game against Greenway. I choked up reading what the other coach had to say about our team! It's so nice to hear that other people actually see how happy they are and how much fun they are having! :)

"Hands down, Bigfork is the best team we have faced this year. Bigfork is a very solid team. Greg (Powell) does a great job up there and his girls are always ready to play," said Wright. "They play basketball the way I think it should be played. They play together, they play incredible defense, they hustle after everything, they play as a team, they are happy.

"That's what it is all about — playing together, having fun and playing as hard as you can. They do a great job of it."

Whine, Whine, Whine

And yes, I would like some cheese with my "whine"!

I was going through the pictures from last night's game and have to show another picture that I have to "whine" about...sorry. Yet another drive to the basket and Shelby is hit so hard she falls to the ground and there is no whistle. So here is the picture of what I think most people would consider a foul? Of course she's my baby so I have the right to be a little prejudiced I guess...

The most frustrating part is the inconsistencies of the calls from one game to the next. You can get hammered in one game and barely touch a girl in another game and they wonder why the players get frustrated. I just wish they would be a little more consistent, especially when tournaments are coming up.

The Greenway Sauna

You never would have known it was winter at the Greenway gymnasium as it was sweltering in that gym! It felt like it was at least 90 degrees and it was miserable for the fans so I can just imagine how difficult it was to play ball in that heat. I felt bad for the girls and their very red cheeks..... (look how red everyone's cheeks are in the pictures before the game even started)

The girls did win convincingly by a score of 65-21 with the score at the halftime being 48-14. But I do believe the heat affected them during the second half as they seemed to lose their legs and couldn't hit anything, or so it seemed as they scored 48 in the first half and only 17 in the second. Greenway had 14 in the first half and 7 in the last half.

I was thinking to myself that this was the hottest gym we had ever been in but then remembered one very hot July at the North Tartan Meltdown (really) in Bloomington, MN. There was no air conditioning and it was 100 degrees outside....the fans were soaked and I remember we had to get ice in bags for the girls to put on their necks and heads when they had a time out. A few players had heat strokes and one even had to be taken out in an ambulance, so I guess last night wasn't the hottest! Anyway, for all of you that weren't there, it was MISERABLY hot!

Shelby had 21, Adrianna 16 with two three's, Lise 12, Megan 8, Theresa 6, Carolyn 2, Kate 2 and Page 1.

Shelby had a few people come to see her play there that live in Grand Rapids, her brother and Ryan Geihler (was the top boy scorer and record 3 holder until Mason Jones-Powell broke both his senior year in 2007), Carole, Shawn and Cain and her future coach from ICC. Other girls had quite a few people that must have been family that lived in Rapids also, because there were many new faces.

My favorite picture is of the four Greenway girls waiting to come into the game...don't know why, but it is! I didn't get many as the lighting wasn't very cooperative in that gym.

Huskies Travel to Greenway Tonight

The girls will play at Greenway tonight for their 18th game of the season. I believe they may have only won one game this season so far, BUT they are a much improved team over the past two years. They have a new coach in his third year and he has put alot of time into these girls over the summer and I remember that they even beat Grand Rapids by one point at summer league! I looked at their team site on Minnesota Scores and it says 1-12 but there are three games that are not reported and I do not know how those games turned out.

And I love their scoreboard as it shows each player on the court individually and their scoring. As players sub, so does the scoreboard. Usually just the bigger schools have those like Grand Rapids and at tournament time. I'll take a picture!

By looking at the scores from the posted games, you can see that their scores are much closer this year than past which shows their improvement. I remember a few years ago when they dominated everyone so they've had their good seasons and I'm sure will again....but TONIGHT will be all Lady Huskie domain and I can imagine that lots of girls will be flying off the bench and getting some varsity minutes.

Shelby had her career high game there last year during the first tournament game and our first tournament game of this season will be played there again come March.

Good luck tonight girls! Looks like we are in for some warmer weather the next four days so enjoy.... :)

Just How "Tough" Are You?

This is a great article by Jay Bilas talking about a team or player's "toughness" and it's not what you originally would think being tough is all about.

Toughness has nothing to do with size, physical strength or athleticism. Some players may be born tough, but I believe that toughness is a skill, and it is a skill that can be developed and improved. Michigan State coach Tom Izzo always says, "Players play, but tough players win." He is right. Here are some of the ways true toughness is exhibited in basketball:

Stephen Curry's effectiveness comes not from his strength or size, but because he's constantly in motion trying to find an open look.

Set a good screen: The toughest players to guard are the players who set good screens. When you set a good screen, you are improving the chances for a teammate to get open, and you are greatly improving your chances of getting open. A good screen can force the defense to make a mistake. A lazy or bad screen is a waste of everyone's time and energy. To be a tough player, you need to be a "screener/scorer," a player who screens hard and immediately looks for an opportunity on offense. On the 1984 U.S. Olympic Team, Bob Knight made Michael Jordan set a screen before he could get a shot. If it is good enough for Jordan, arguably the toughest player ever, it is good enough for you.

Set up your cut: The toughest players make hard cuts, and set up their cuts. Basketball is about deception. Take your defender one way, and then plant the foot opposite of the direction you want to go and cut hard. A hard cut may get you a basket, but it may also get a teammate a basket. If you do not make a hard cut, you will not get anyone open. Setting up your cut, making the proper read of the defense, and making a hard cut require alertness, good conditioning and good concentration. Davidson's Stephen Curry is hardly a physical muscle-man, but he is a tough player because he is in constant motion, he changes speeds, he sets up his cuts, and he cuts hard. Curry is hard to guard, and he is a tough player.

Talk on defense: The toughest players talk on defense, and communicate with their teammates. It is almost impossible to talk on defense and not be in a stance, down and ready, with a vision of man and ball. If you talk, you let your teammates know you are there, and make them and yourself better defenders. It also lets your opponent know that you are fully engaged.

Jump to the ball: When on defense, the tough defenders move as the ball moves. The toughest players move on the flight of the ball, not when it gets to its destination. And the toughest players jump to the ball and take away the ball side of the cut. Tough players don't let cutters cut across their face -- they make the cutter change his path.

Don't get screened: No coach can give a player the proper footwork to get through every screen. Tough players have a sense of urgency not to get screened and to get through screens so that the cutter cannot catch the ball where he wants to. A tough player makes the catch difficult.

Get your hands up: A pass discouraged is just as good as a pass denied. Tough players play with their hands up to take away vision, get deflections and to discourage a pass in order to allow a teammate to cover up. Cutters and post players will get open, if only for a count. If your hands are up, you can keep the passer from seeing a momentary opening.

Play the ball, see your man: Most defenders see the ball and hug their man, because they are afraid to get beat. A tough defender plays the ball and sees his man. There is a difference.

Get on the floor: In my first road game as a freshman, there was a loose ball that I thought I could pick up and take the other way for an easy one. While I was bending over at the waist, one of my opponents dived on the floor and got possession of the ball. My coach was livid. We lost possession of the ball because I wasn't tough enough to get on the floor for it. I tried like hell never to get out-toughed like that again.

The first player to get to the floor is usually the one to come up with any loose ball.Close out under control: It is too easy to fly at a shooter and think you are a tough defender. A tough defender closes out under control, takes away a straight line drive and takes away the shot. A tough player has a sense of urgency but has the discipline to do it the right way.
Post your man, not a spot: Most post players just blindly run to the low block and get into a shoving match for a spot on the floor. The toughest post players are posting their defensive man. A tough post player is always open, and working to get the ball to the proper angle to get a post feed. Tough post players seal on ball reversal and call for the ball, and they continue to post strong even if their teammates miss them.

Run the floor: Tough players sprint the floor, which drags the defense and opens up things for others. Tough players run hard and get "easy" baskets, even though there is nothing easy about them. Easy baskets are hard to get. Tough players don't take tough shots -- they work hard to make them easy.

Play so hard, your coach has to take you out: I was a really hard worker in high school and college. But I worked and trained exceptionally hard to make playing easier. I was wrong. I once read that Bob Knight had criticized a player of his by saying, "You just want to be comfortable out there!" Well, that was me, and when I read that, it clicked with me. I needed to work to increase my capacity for work, not to make it easier to play. I needed to work in order to be more productive in my time on the floor. Tough players play so hard that their coaches have to take them out to get rest so they can put them back in. The toughest players don't pace themselves.

Get to your teammate first: When your teammate lays his body on the line to dive on the floor or take a charge, the tough players get to him first to help him back up. If your teammate misses a free throw, tough players get to him right away. Tough players are also great teammates.

Take responsibility for your teammates: Tough players expect a lot from their teammates, but they also put them first. When the bus leaves at 9 a.m., tough players not only get themselves there, but they also make sure their teammates are up and get there, too. Tough players take responsibility for others in addition to themselves. They make sure their teammates eat first, and they give credit to their teammates before taking it themselves.

Take a charge: Tough players are in a stance, playing the ball, and alert in coming over from the weak side and taking a charge. Tough players understand the difference between being in the right spot and being in the right spot with the intention of stopping somebody. Some players will look puzzled and say, "But I was in the right spot." Tough players know that they have to get to the right spot with the sense of urgency to stop someone.

The toughest players never shy away from taking a charge.Get in a stance: Tough players don't play straight up and down and put themselves in the position of having to get ready to get ready. Tough players are down in a stance on both ends of the floor, with feet staggered and ready to move. Tough players are the aggressor, and the aggressor is in a stance.

Finish plays: Tough players don't just get fouled, they get fouled and complete the play. They don't give up on a play or assume that a teammate will do it. A tough player plays through to the end of the play and works to finish every play.

Work on your pass: A tough player doesn't have his passes deflected. A tough player gets down, pivots, pass-fakes, and works to get the proper angle to pass away from the defense and deliver the ball.

Throw yourself into your team's defense: A tough player fills his tank on the defensive end, not on offense. A tough player is not deterred by a missed shot. A tough player values his performance first by how well he defended.

Take and give criticism the right way: Tough players can take criticism without feeling the need to answer back or give excuses. They are open to getting better and expect to be challenged and hear tough things. You will never again in your life have the opportunity you have now at the college level: a coaching staff that is totally and completely dedicated to making you and your team better. Tough players listen and are not afraid to say what other teammates may not want to hear, but need to hear.

Show strength in your body language: Tough players project confidence and security with their body language. They do not hang their heads, do not react negatively to a mistake of a teammate, and do not whine and complain to officials. Tough players project strength, and do not cause their teammates to worry about them. Tough players do their jobs, and their body language communicates that to their teammates -- and to their opponents.

Catch and face: Teams that press and trap are banking on the receiver's falling apart and making a mistake. When pressed, tough players set up their cuts, cut hard to an open area and present themselves as a receiver to the passer. Tough players catch, face the defense, and make the right read and play, and they do it with poise. Tough players do not just catch and dribble; they catch and face.

Don't get split: If you trap, a tough player gets shoulder-to-shoulder with his teammate and does not allow the handler to split the trap and gain an advantage on the back side of the trap.

Be alert: Tough players are not "cool." Tough players are alert and active, and tough players communicate with teammates so that they are alert, too. Tough players echo commands until everyone is on the same page. They understand the best teams play five as one. Tough players are alert in transition and get back to protect the basket and the 3-point line. Tough players don't just run back to find their man, they run back to stop the ball and protect the basket.

Concentrate, and encourage your teammates to concentrate: Concentration is a skill, and tough players work hard to concentrate on every play. Tough players go as hard as they can for as long as they can.

No team can be great defensively without communication and concentration. It's not your shot; it's our shot: Tough players don't take bad shots, and they certainly don't worry about getting "my" shots. Tough players work for good shots and understand that it is not "my" shot, it is "our" shot. Tough players celebrate when "we" score.

Box out and go to the glass every time: Tough players are disciplined enough to lay a body on someone. They make first contact and go after the ball. And tough players do it on every possession, not just when they feel like it. They understand defense is not complete until they secure the ball.

Take responsibility for your actions: Tough players make no excuses. They take responsibility for their actions. Take James Johnson for example. With 17 seconds to go in Wake's game against Duke on Wednesday, Jon Scheyer missed a 3-pointer that bounced right to Johnson. But instead of aggressively pursuing the ball with a sense of urgency, Johnson stood there and waited for the ball to come to him. It never did. Scheyer grabbed it, called a timeout and the Blue Devils hit a game-tying shot on a possession they never should've had. Going after the loose ball is toughness -- and Johnson didn't show it on that play. But what happened next? He re-focused, slipped a screen for the winning basket, and after the game -- when he could've been basking only in the glow of victory -- manned up to the mistake that could've cost his team the win. "That was my responsibility -- I should have had that," Johnson said of the goof. No excuses. Shouldering the responsibility. That's toughness.

Look your coaches and teammates in the eye: Tough players never drop their heads. They always look coaches and teammates in the eye, because if they are talking, it is important to them and to you.

Move on to the next play: Tough players don't waste time celebrating a good play or lamenting a bad one. They understand that basketball is too fast a game to waste time and opportunities with celebratory gestures or angry reactions. Tough players move on to the next play. They know that the most important play in any game is the next one.

Be hard to play against, and easy to play with: Tough players make their teammates' jobs easier, and their opponents' jobs tougher.

Make every game important: Tough players don't categorize opponents and games. They know that if they are playing, it is important. Tough players understand that if they want to play in championship games, they must treat every game as a championship game.

Make getting better every day your goal: Tough players come to work every day to get better, and keep their horizons short. They meet victory and defeat the same way: They get up the next day and go to work to be better than they were the day before. Tough players hate losing but are not shaken or deterred by a loss. Tough players enjoy winning but are never satisfied. For tough players, a championship or a trophy is not a goal; it is a destination. The goal is to get better every day.

When I was playing, the players I respected most were not the best or most talented players. The players I respected most were the toughest players. I don't remember anything about the players who talked a good game or blocked a shot and acted like a fool. I remember the players who were tough to play against.

Anybody can talk. Not anybody can be tough.

Takin' Care of Bizness

The Lady Huskies defeated rival Deer River tonight by the score of 57-35. If it weren't for a freshman's half court shot (which I missed!) they would have ended up with 32. I was putting my camera away when she hit it...I wish I would have seen it because I haven't seen one of those in a long time. You have to be happy for anyone that gets one of those and the crowd loves it too! The score at the half was 29-16. Scoring tonight was Shelby with 24, Andi with 11, Megan with 8, Lise with 7, Kate with 3, and Theresa and Robin with 2 each.

Anyway, it was a packed house and we had three refs tonight instead of the normal two. We were a little worried when we saw that one of the refs used to be their Athletic Director and has a daugther on the team (the one that hit the half court shot no less). But things went okay and the fouls were pretty even....of course there is always one or two calls that you have to yell about, but I think that is normal.

I got to visit with Lulu Seelye's mom who has one daughter left playing, Jodie. They are some of the nicest people and fun to visit with. Shelby played AAU ball with Lulu and Allie and made fast friends with them and we had the opportunity to ride share and room share with them so we got to know each other found out that rivals can be friends! That is one of the things that I loved about AAU ball....all of the new friends you make from all over the state.

As you can see by a few of the pictures, I did have my camera out when Erzar hit the half court shot and you can see on the last picture that Coach Powell wasn't looking and the bench was happy for her too! Also the one call that I didn't like last night shows in the picture where #11 Peterson ran to intercept a pass and slammed into Shelby...there was no call. Megan had done the same thing earlier and received a foul for her troubles...I also like the picture of Shelby with her tongue out at the free throw line in serious concentration, no doubt. And I love the one of Lise under the basket with that determined expression on her face, yet again.

Sorry, but another favorite is at the end of the game when the starters are on the bench and congratulating each other for their game and Coach Powell is talking to Shelby on the right of the picture. These little moments that are caught on camera and frozen in time are what inspire me as this team inspires me and many, many others. They are a joy to watch and after each game, you just can't wait to get to the next one.....if you have not seen them play, you are missing out.
