My first posting on my first ever blog. I am the assistant volleyball coach at Bigfork High School in Bigfork, MN, love photography and LOVE watching my daughter and her fellow teammates play volleyball and basketball at Bigfork High School.
Our volleyball season just ended this past Tuesday evening (October 31, 2006) as we lost in the semi-final match against the Cook Gophers, 1-3. We had beaten this team in our last regular season match and should have beaten them again, but came up short as we had too many service errors. We had a very exciting season, overcoming a few obstacles that made the team stronger. It was sad to see the season end, especially for our three special seniors. We are going to miss their exceptional athletic abilities on the volleyball court next season!
Now is the countdown until the first girls basketball game at Bigfork this season. We should have a great season as we ended up last year 18-9, without a single senior for the past two years. The girls had a busy summer, with five of them playing AAU basketball for the Minnesota Gym Rats, and the rest playing for the team in summer tournaments and team camps.
The girls that played AAU ball, started practices in late March through April and then started playing in tournaments in Minneapolis/St. Paul every other weekend. Their teams made it to the MN AAU State Championship games in May and then went on to huge tournaments in Menominee, WI, Minneapolis, MN and Chicago, IL. They played ball against some of the toughest teams in Minnesota, plus teams from all over the country at the Nike Summer Showcase in Chicago. They've all learned alot from the experience and it will be fun to see how their skills have all improved once they start playing basketball for their high school team, the Bigfork Huskies.
Their first game is at home against the Cotton Cardinals. We lost to them last year on the road by 6 points. We had our opportunities but came up a little short. They lost their star player last year and we've only gotten stronger, so we should beat them at home this year.
Shelby called me from school and said that our starting point guard, Jenna Beckner, rolled her car last night and totaled the car. Luckily she was wearing her seatbelt and had no major injuries, just a sore arm, thank goodness.
Most of the girls are staying after school to start lifting weights on their own and to try and get some shooting time during open gym. They've only just gotten done with volleyball and are ready to get in shape for basketball practice that begins November 13th. A very dedicated group of young ladies!
I'll post more later on "The Players" on this year's team and how the team fared last year, plus some of the girls statistics from last year.
